Having trouble

I've been having trouble understanding the diagrams of several books I've recently picked up. No doubt its because I am still new to origami, but when I begin experimenting with the designs I see in a book I tend to run into the same problem over and over again..

I will begin folding several of the easier designs and have no problems at all. But as soon as I attempt an "intermediate" design I hit a roadblock. I'll begin folding when all of a sudden the directions aren't as step-by-step specific and the diagrams look like they've skipped ahead a step or two.

I feel like there is a strange gap between "beginner" and "intermediate" that I'm having trouble bridging. Does any else run into the same problem? Any tips? I'll keep trying, but any insight that will make it easier would be really appreciated!

Pretty much more of the same of what you have read about him, but I thought I'd stick something in this forum anyway.
And, on a not strictly origami but pretty cool paper toys, there is this guy:

I created some new PDF documentation in OpenOffice
on creating 2 peice boxes with Photuki

http://www.geocities.com/thinkways/cubic/photuki_rect_box.pdf

Please let me know if there is difficulty following this. I haven't
included instructions on printing because that varies with whatever
photo editing software you have installed. I plan on more
documentation for using the software and instructions for
folding the cube variation.

Jill Britton has a
<a href ="http://britton.disted.camosun.bc.ca/photuki_escher.jpg">
Photuki image using Escher tiles </a> as an activity link for her book, Polyhedra

Origami Outside

I'm working on something like a mobile that I want to bring to parties and outdoor festivals. The models will probably get wet and I want to prepare them so that'll be ok. Suggestions?

Some ideas I've got but haven't tested yet:
+ thick, high-quality paper - it won't fall apart, but thick is tougher to fold
+ add a bit of oil before folding - would the oil weaken thin paper?
+ add a bit of starch - just for strength
+ paint it when it's done - but it'd be difficult to protect all the little spots water would collect in
...or maybe paper can get wet and dry again and it's all good?

Another question is: how can origami be attatched to string in a way that lets me detach it and move it around easily?

Finally, we have had more than two consecutive days of sun so I am celebrating!

I changed the main photo because it is so colorful.

Also, I got a phone with a camera attached so I plan to upload some new photos of things I have done.

Happy New Year to all our folders!

I was very happy to receive Origami Design Secrets by Robert J. Lang for Xmas. I have hardly scratched the surface of the huge volume. Okay, truth be told, I opened it once, then put in the bookshelf with my other origami books.

Anyway, I wanted to give a shout out to Michael for posting some new pictures of his to our album. Please check them out. I am planning to post some pictures, just as soon as I get a round tuit... Anyone know how to fold one of those? [ducking]

And don't be shy about posting your recent creations. Already the Japanese are celebrating the year of the Dog, so it would be nice to have a different main photo for the tribe, whaddya think?

Cheers!

this is a single sheet gift box/photo cube/ornament
template.

You'll need a printer and software that will let
you edit and print out a JPEG file, hopefully being able to scale and position the image.

Letter size paper will get you about a two inch model,
after trimming off the margins.

I've made several different ones, and filled them with
Cashew Roca.

Origami & the Workplace

Sometimes I find myself with bits of free time between tasks, so I fold a little something. Other times, when trying to think through a problem, I keep my hands occupied by folding a little something.

As you can imagine, after a while I have a butt load of little somethings. So I kept them in bags or boxes. Some were good enough to display on my cubicle wall, like my origami quilt or the 5 day pagoda (from the Origami a Day Calendar).

Now, they have named the aisle I am in "Origami Gulch." So I took some of those stored little somethings & used them to decorate the tops of the cube walls so it really is an "Origami Gulch." I work with a nice bunch of people.

Does anyone else have anecdotes of "Origami & the Workplace?"

Does anybody know of any retail outlets in Long Beach or Los Angeles that carry a more extensive selection of origami papers? I've already tried Michael's and some book stores, but I can only seem to find one size... I'd like to find some of the smaller and larger papers, as well as different prints.. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance for your help.... ;)

I'm facinated for some reason with folding cardstocks, particularly business cards. Probably cause I print them all day long :). So I thought I'd share.

DIY origami class in SF

so i've been thinking that i want to make a DIY origami class. meet once every two weeks or so and spend a couple hours going over a particular aspect of origami. say, learning the various bases and their variations, working out a difficult figure and understanding what's going on with it, exploring nontraditional techniques such as cutting and modules, constructing a figure from a photograph with no instructions, making variations on a form, etc.

the goal would be to start with people with moderate-to-good proficiency and deepen our understanding of how things work, with an eye toward being able to do origami creatively. i'm thinking we'd trade off who runs classes, with a person bringing in a particular goal or problem for each class.

i'd be happy to host it at my place, which is by the daly city bart, or else figure out a more centrally located meeting place. if i can get 2-3 other people interested, i'm thinking that'd be enough to forge ahead.

so, let me know if you're interested.

Russian Origami

Recently, I bought a book titled Russian Origami. It is a very interesting book because in addition to the different folds, there is a short write up on the person who invented the fold or submitted it for publication. It also provides a history of how origami became popular throughout Russia. Apparently, after the break up of the Soviet Union, a publishing company that normally put out chemistry books found doing books on origami very lucrative and kept them in business during some bad times.

re-using microwavable frozen lunch containers

I have an idea about re-using the popular microwavable frozen lunch "bowls".

My idea is to wash and save the bowls for foods that I believe I could approximately re-create at home with my limited cooking time and skills.

Has anyone had luck with Glad Press-N-Seal in the freezer? Anyway, I would basically be re-using the entire package, since the cardboard label is simple origami, held together by tabs rather than glue. The other side of the label is plain brown, so I could even make some other food, label and date it, and fold it in reverse.

See the .jpgs I scanned of the SeaPak garlic herb shrimp packaging in the tribe photos. I guess I could even use the label as a template and make my own.

Anyone have anything else to add to my idea or has anyone tried it already? Does it work well? Does the plastic hold up?

Paper jewel cases for CDs

I've been doing some experimentation with legal size sheets of 70 pound paper (twice as thick as normal paper) and I've found that a highly functional CD case can be made with it. The average CD case is a 4 x 4 in square and utilizing the 8 in side of the legal paper. It might be possible to do this with a letter size piece but the extra paper on the legal piece adds extra strength and durability.

That might save you guys a little bit a money that you would otherwise spend on jewel cases.

Hi, I'm new here. I've been in a folding frenzy lately, as I've just discovered these paper lucky stars:

http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Studios/8012/creation/star.html

The past few days I've been making little baby stars, made from origami paper cut into 8mm strips. I'm making a bead string with little stars folded from gold metallic origami paper and regular beads... really fun thing to do on the bus, while watching a movie, while bored at work... :)

hey all,

I made a folding tutorial for a friend of mine's project and after reading about the 'CD case' fold in this tribe i'm considering doing a few more.

I've posted the tutorial in the photo section here. Any comments or suggestions for future tutorials would go a long way.

Thanks everybody!

New Feature Roll Out

Good afternoon,

I have been informed that in a few days, Tribe.net "will add a new feature that allows your Tribe's members to automatically download discussion threads to a computer, or publish them on a Web site. These RSS feeds will be available for all Public and Moderated Tribes -- RSS is a data format that allows people to easily share and syndicate online content."

Folders is currently a public tribe so this feature will also apply to our tribe.

What does this mean?

- Members receive the latest messages from a discussion *as soon as they're posted.*
- Anyone can post the URL for your Tribe's RSS feed in an email signature or on other networking sites, which will bring in many more participants.
- Members can offer RSS feeds in their blogs, so your Tribe will be read far and wide.

Therefore it follows that our Tribe's content may appear:

- On Web sites that carry RSS feeds
- In other people's blogs
- In newsreaders (software that downloads RSS feeds to a personal computer)

As Tribe Moderator, I have the ability to turn off this feature, but I do not plan to do so. I think what the folks at Tribe.net are doing is really great and I want to support them in any and all new features they roll out.

Just remember what you post may be read by people outside of our niche and reflects upon not just yourself but on Folders and Tribe.net. My apologies if you think that goes without saying, but I have found it is better to over communicate than to take things for granted. I think we have a great tribe and thank everyone of you for joining and participating.

Anyway, once the new feature rolls out there will be some help text that appears on our tribe home page or you can send line to help@tribe.net, and they will get back to you.

Sincerely,

David Johnson

I like *animals*. So many dollar folds are like rings, or bowties, or other simple things.

Here's my *favorite* dollar fold. It's by Fred Rohm. I modified the instructions to make it easier, and I photographed the folds cuz I can't draw straight lines. :)

http://kiki.org/origami/buck.html

Enjoy! And please post any other cool dollar folds!

Hi! My sister is an excellent animal form folder, which left me with the comfortable niche of specializing in unit origami, highly recommend a couple of books by tomoko fuse.

Anyway, something i've long been looking for to no success, are any patterns to fold out of disposable chopstick wrappers-- I know *someone* has some clever ways to fold them up into chopstick holders or just nice little widgets...?

Origami & Me

My first introduction to origami was when my father brought home a little pack of paper and instructions one weekend when I was 6 or 7 years old. I could make the easy ones like a drinking cup or the face of a dog, but the crane was beyond my reach and more than half of the folds in the book required mastering the crane. So by the end of the weekend I threw the booklet across the room and cut up the pretty papers into snowflakes and paper dolls.

Flash forward to high school. It's the eighties and everyone is worried about nucler war. So our teacher decides to give us extra credit for folding cranes. This time I am determined to succeed and practicing with my classmates finally master the fold. From there, there is no stopping me! However, where to get more diagrams?

My mother takes me to a Japanese book store on the north side of Chicago and I find a book written entirely in Japanese but the diagrams are relatively easy to follow. At the time, I couldn't read a word of the language so some of the folds didn't make sense. Like all the decorations for Tanabata and New Years. Anyway, it is from that book that I learn the lily, my favorite fold.

The lily is a combination of the angular and the organic. Sharp trianagles and curved petals, soft and hard at the same time. I folded them during most of my free time in high school and the first year of college.

Flash forward again to Japan, where I am an exchange student. My friend, who also likes origami, and I are searching for a shop in Kyoto that sells traditional dyed paper. Soon we are lost and get more and more lost. Finally we stop outside a flower shop to ask for directions and two of the kindest people in the city not only offer to take us to the shop (where we can only afford a single sheet of paper), but they also treat us to lunch and introduce us to their neighbor, who just happens to be an origami master.

He shows us some of his creations, including a full set of armor from the warring states period folded from tan and black paper. While there is no official "Living Treasure" for origami in Japan, he would have been a good candidate for the position.

And now it is now. One can get paper and diagrams on the web or at your local store. Origami isn't as exotic for me as it once once. It's more like an old friend that can keep me company when I don't have anything to do or will help calm my nerves when I need to concentrate on a difficult task. Origami will always be a part of my life.
